The Lake House
An upscale lodge-inspired restaurant tucked quietly along the shores of Bonavista Lake; The Lake House is a place to relax and connect to an era gone by. The restaurant’s design reflects the old Canadian Rockies while being deeply connected to its stunning location within the lake community.
As part of a large and diverse team, we helped the Lakehouse come into its own. Consisting of, in part, a client with strong design sensibilities, a sculptural designer and a woodworker deft in salvage design, the key was collaboration. Something that Peake is no stranger to.
The building itself is a half-century old and with that comes both hurdles and opportunities. Retrofitting the windows with double-hung, depression era replacements was a must and ensured the essential connection between the building and the surrounding lake. The exposed ceilings were a gift of working with an existing structure and add to the lodge-feel that so captures the identity of the Lake House. The fireplace was an existing element as well, but was reimagined with precast concrete to express a railroad era feel.
The feel of the old Canadian Rockies resonates through this space. Serene lake views and structural beams and rafters carry you from inside to outside. A seat at the salvaged period-bar allows the warmth of materials to envelop you – with dark woods and a distressed window-clad backsplash creating the perfect vignette. Thanks to a wonderful team and a unique opportunity we were able to bring the Rockies to Lake Bonavista.
